Magical Titbits is the outlier in Hoffmann’s influential series of books on conjuring. Having written three extremely large and significant magic books between 1876 and 1903 he had hoped to carry on this trend with a fourth similar volume. Age and other commitments put a stop to this though and, to tie up loose ends, a smaller volume was produced.

The first part of this book consists of descriptions of new miscellaneous tricks, much as his previous volumes had done. The second, much larger, part focuses on the life and magic effects of Hoffmann’s late friend, and fellow magician, Hartz. Thanks to the inclusion of a biographical chapter, this book gives a rare insight into the working life of a late nineteenth century conjurer.

Magical Titbits was included in many editions of Hoffmann’s Later Magic and, as such, is often overlooked as an important magic text in its own right. If Magical Titbits had not been proceeded by Hoffmann’s Modern, More and Later Magic it would likely be seen as a classic today.
