This book collects together five essays on automata written by the legendary magician and inventor John Nevil Maskelyne. These essays were first published in Leisure Hour in 1879. The first four are a chronological history of automata and the final is a look back over Maskelyne's own inventions, including the highly influential Psycho. This unabridged edition has been transcribed from original cuttings from Leisure Hour preserved by a friend of Jasper Maskelyne. All of the original illustrations are also reproduced in the book including four of Maskelyne's automata. You can watch a video about the book here.
